Change for the greater good

To conserve the Asian elephant for future generations, ElefantAsia understands that implementing projects alone is not nearly enough.

We must also facilitate change. In order to promote elephant conservation effectively in Laos and the region, we recognise that there is a clear need for a change in mindset and in policy. Local people and decision-makers alike must see elephants and their natural habitat as an important asset in need of preservation. Increasing environmental awareness within rural communities situated inside or within close proximity of protected areas that host wild elephants is one way to achieve this. ElefantAsia implements several environmental education programmes and anti-poaching campaigns in villages close to elephant habitat to promote species conservation and assist reduce poaching and incidences of human-elephant conflict. ElefantAsia too works to promote better governance in the area of animal welfare. In collaboration with the Department of Livestock and Fisheries we are working towards implementation an Elephant Welfare Policy that will safeguard the working rights of mahouts and their elephants in Laos. Through advocacy and networking in both local authorities and communities, we are also able to support and influence conservation policies that will ultimately lead to improved management of wild and captive elephants habitats.
